Influencing Without Authority: Building your power and impact as an LGBTQ+ leader
Influence is not just about confidence, personality or being the loudest voice in the room. It is about understanding how power works, recognising where you already have influence, and building meaningful relationships that help create change - join us to find out more.

Many LGBTQ+ professionals find themselves driving change, supporting others and influencing culture long before they hold formal positions of authority. Whether it is advocating for inclusion, shaping decisions, challenging assumptions or progressing your own career, the ability to influence is a vital leadership skill.
But influence is not just about confidence, personality or being the loudest voice in the room. It is about understanding how power works, recognising where you already have influence, and building meaningful relationships that help create change.
This interactive Pride in Leadership session explores how LGBTQ+ professionals can develop their influence and impact, even when they do not have positional power. We will look at the visible and invisible dynamics that shape organisations, how to build alliances, and how to move from feeling stuck outside the system to becoming someone who can shape it.
This session will help participants to:
-
Understand different types of power and influence, including the power we may underestimate in ourselves
-
Explore how identity, visibility and lived experience can shape the way LGBTQ+ people experience leadership
-
Recognise the difference between formal authority and genuine influence
-
Identify the relationships, networks and alliances that help us create change
-
Develop practical approaches for influencing decisions, culture and people across organisations
-
Reflect on how to step into greater impact without feeling the need to change who we are
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
-
Describe different sources of influence beyond job title or seniority
-
Recognise visible, hidden and invisible forms of power within organisations
-
Identify where they already have influence and where they could strengthen it
-
Map key stakeholders, allies and relationships needed to achieve their goals
-
Apply practical tools to build trust, find shared purpose and influence more effectively
-
Create a personal action plan for increasing their leadership impact
This session is designed for LGBTQ+ professionals at all stages of their careers, whether you are leading teams, influencing from within an organisation, building your confidence, or looking to create change in your workplace and beyond.
