A call to action – survey of LGBTQ+ people examining potential barriers to career development
There is very little information out there on LGBTQ+ career development. Take our survey and help us to tell our stories.
A call to action: improving career development opportunities for LGBTQ+ people
In recent years, significant strides have been made to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The Parker Review has brought critical attention to racial diversity, while McKinsey’s efforts have championed gender equality. However, there remains a notable gap in addressing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in professional environments. That is why we are launching a comprehensive survey of career development experiences – to help drive change. Please complete the survey here.
The current landscape
While there are valuable insights from studies such as Stonewall’s 2018 report on bullying and discrimination, Just Like Us’ report on Growing up LGBT, and Layla McCay’s illuminating book “Breaking the Rainbow Ceiling,” the data available on LGBTQ+ experiences in the workplace is still sparse.
And we do know that in the Fortune 500, only four CEOs are openly LGBTQ+ (with one recently retired), and just 0.8% of Fortune 500 board members identify as LGBTQ+.
While these figures could show that we are under-represented, we can not really be sure that that is the case. Some LGBTQ+ people thrive at work, some reach the top and then come out, others struggle at different stages. And we do not know the impact of intersectionality on leadership opportunities either. That is why we are asking you to tell us.
Why your participation matters
The ultimate goal of this survey is to inform and influence policies at all organisational levels, fostering environments where LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive. By participating, you are contributing to a vital resource that can drive evidence-based change, inspire organisational leaders, and pave the way for future generations of LGBTQ+ professionals.
Your voice is crucial in shaping a more inclusive future. The data collected will be anonymised and aggregated to compile a comprehensive report that highlights both the positive experiences and the areas needing improvement. By participating in this survey, you will provide valuable insights that will help inform more inclusive workplaces and actively support the growth and success of LGBTQ+ employees.
We understand the sensitivity of the topics covered in this survey, which includes questions about discrimination and hate. Participation is entirely anonymous, and you are not required to answer any questions that you are uncomfortable with. The information you provide will be treated with the utmost confidentiality, allowing you to share your experiences openly and honestly.
We stand at a pivotal moment in the journey towards workplace equality. By understanding the barriers to career growth for LGBTQ+ professionals, we can take meaningful steps towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone. Your participation in this survey is not just about sharing your experiences—it’s about contributing to a broader movement for change. Let’s work together to ensure that all professionals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, have the opportunity to succeed and lead in their careers.
Incentive – To show our appreciation for your time and contribution (approximately 10-15 minutes), you can choose to be entered into a prize draw to win £150 in Amazon or Queer Lit vouchers at the end of the survey.
