Zìyóu Studio: “I believe that clothing is a vehicle for queer empowerment ”

Zìyóu Studio, a queer-owned, gender-neutral sustainable office wear brand, is challenging traditional fashion with a strong focus on purpose, community, and circularity. We pride ourselves on being at the intersection between identity and sustainability.

Using deadstock fabrics that would otherwise be discarded, Zìyóu Studio transforms waste from large industries into timeless, high-quality smart casual pieces, handmade in the UK and crafted to be worn and appreciated repeatedly. Founded by Katie (she/her), Zìyóu Studio offers more than clothing; it serves as a means to empower individuals, especially within the queer community, and to fight fast fashion by giving materials a second life. 1% of all our proceeds with be used to support queer youth charities.

Why did you set up your label, and was there a particular turning point?

I launched Zìyóu Studio out of necessity. I was looking for clothing that provided a creative outlet to wear beautifully designed, sustainable officewear, but I saw a massive disconnect in the market. Most high-street brands, like Zara, focus on a very binary aesthetic and rarely speak to or represent the queer community.

Our label’s purpose is to empower queer people and provide a gender-neutral, affirming choice. Success, for me, was marked by our recent pop-up at Westfield in London. That exposure was validation that the demand for authentic, ethical, and inclusive professional wear is real. It proved that our mission resonates beyond just our initial community.

How does sustainability and circularity inform Zìyóu Studio’s design process and brand values?

Sustainability isn’t a feature; it’s the foundation of how we design. We prioritise longevity and slow fashion by committing to pieces that are genuinely made to last and feel timeless.

Our approach is built on circularity, starting with our materials, which are responsible, traceable, and often deadstock. We avoid overproduction by focusing on limited, seasonal runs. This allows us to re-work and evolve pieces, encouraging a reworkable approach where designs build on the last. Every garment is an investment against fast fashion, intended to be worn, loved, and utilised year after year.

What do you think are the most important things to focus on when building a brand in today’s fashion landscape?

The most vital elements are authenticity and confidence.

A brand needs to know its core values and communicate that consistently across every touchpoint, from the quality of the product to the stories we tell. People want to buy into a community that represents more than just a transaction; they want to feel part of a world. By defining our own values and operating with authenticity, we automatically set ourselves apart.

Building a strong community is equally important. Having gained support through the BIPC and completed an Innovate bootcamp, I know the structural business side is necessary, but the emotional connection is what truly makes a brand stand out.

What do you tell yourself right now, as you stand at the beginning of this journey?

I would remind myself to embrace unconventional paths. Don’t feel the pressure to follow a traditional business model, because there isn’t one universal path to success. The very thing that makes your brand unique – your commitment to queer empowerment and timeless designs – is your greatest strength.

Finally, get comfortable with the business side early on. Your creativity will always be the mission, but building a strong financial and operational structure will help sustain your vision and ensure your impact can grow. This is something we are actively working on to ensure we can sustain ourselves sustainably in the long term.
